Artist: Bradley Hudson (SCO)
Bradley Hudson is a Glasgow-based visual artist working across mixed media painting, drawing, and collage. His practice embraces a raw, instinctive aesthetic influenced by naïve and abstract expressionism. Rooted in personal experience, Hudson’s work reflects on growing up in the aftermath of Northern Ireland’s political unrest, while increasingly examining how the past interacts with their current environment. These memories are reimagined as absurd, dreamlike scenes -part diary, part theatre- infused with dark humour and an anthropological lens.A central concern is the relationship between inside and outside-through domestic and social spaces, and as a metaphor for the internal and external self. Their paintings act as confessionals, shaped by emotion, memory, and queerness; collages serve as investigations, piecing together fragments from media, politics, and popular culture to examine identity and ideology. Grid-like structures recur throughout Hudson’s work, unifying collage, painting, and drawing within the same visual world. The grid functions as both a compositional device and a symbol of layered experience.
Themes of memory, ambience, magical realism, and the abject shape surreal environments and distorted figures-tools for psychological storytelling. Hudson’s work explores the collision between personal histories and cultural mythologies, and how both shape the spaces we inhabit.
